Taking it to the Streets

The Sustainable Streets program is about connecting people at a neighbourhood level to exchange ideas and knowledge to create a shared future for their community. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s program, ‘Living Smart Homes’, provides the foundation for the Sustainable Streets program.

But that is just the start... neighbourhoods can then organise themselves to form interest groups based around anything that inspires or motivates them, such as composting, bush-care, art workshops...whatever captures the heart, mind and spirit! Neighbourhood groups can even band together to form cooperatives to buy organic food or solar power (or both).

• getting to know your neighbours

the cool streets challenge

Our first target: to get 100 streets in the Sunshine Coast region participating in the sustainable streets program by June 2009!!

Get involved! Green Sunshine would like to invite you to bring your street together. Get creative in making sustainability a reality!

The Cool Streets Challenge is a callout to the residents of the Sunshine Coast region to get on board the Sustainable Streets program so you can make a difference wherever you are living. By participating in the program you can help to reduce your carbon footprint on the planet, save some money on your bills, meet some new people locally, discover a hidden passion and.... be doing a ‘feel good’ thing (who doesn’t want to feel good??).

All this Challenge requires is some courage, commitment and creativity with a good dash of fun and flair.

To assist those participating in the Challenge, Green Sunshine has developed a ‘toolbox’. The toolbox consists of some ‘how-to’ checklists, templates and resources to get the Street Champion and fellow residents going. The toolbox can be found at: www.livingsmarthomes.net.au or can be downloaded HERE.

A starting point in becoming a Sustainable Street is to get yourself and some fellow nieghbours onto the Living Smart Homes program www.livingsmarthomes.net.au. The Living Smart Homes program is an excellent Council run program that has online modules for you to learn about how to make savings on energy, water, waste and transport.  By completing the modules which record how you use resources, Green Sunshine can then measure and report all the environmental savings (energy, water, waste and carbon) that we have collectively made throughout the region. We will also develop some ‘quality of life’ and ‘well-being’ indices that will enable us to see how your lives have been enriched by being a part of the program.
